People do things for reasons other than bolstering their egos and making money. You shouldn't need a motivation or justification to correct spelling or factual errors on Wikipedia -- a certain desire for orderliness, good grammar, or truth should be sufficient.
Part of this sorting out of careers is sexism, but part of it is that men are just better at being arrogant, and less concerned about people thinking we’re stupid (often correctly, it should be noted) for trying things we’re not qualified for.
While I strongly support any and all efforts to get women to speak with confidence about what they do and who they are, assimilation won't get us to be where we should be. Far too many academic women tried this, a practice that I always thought of as out-manning the men. It was a survival mechanism for them but dear god it's terrifying. We don't want that in other industries too. What we want is diversity.
Diversity is one of those sticky terms that people seem to boil down to creating a Benetton ad. Diversity isn't about some magical collection of five differently colored skin tones. It's about bringing different perspectives and backgrounds to the table and creating an environment that values what can be gained from different voices who've taken different paths. Skin color (or gender performance) is often interpreted as a reasonable substitute for this and, for many reasons, it has been historically. But bringing in a woman whose attitude and approach is just as masculine as the men isn't going to help your team break outside of its current mindset. They key is to bring people who think differently than you. Of course, that's darn tricky. Because you need need similarity AND diversity to be successful. But this is a rant for another post.
And clearly, if aggressive self-promotion and pompous self-aggrandizement is what gets people ahead in the world, then at the individual level, it's better to perform in that kind of way than it is to sit passively and watch yourself get passed over by more clumsy, venal, smug, aggressive, macho idiots.
I don’t believe my link to a blog is an implicit endorsement of the entire archives of another blog. I’m willing to bet that I would find something I disagreed with strongly in the archive of any blog out there. I just link out because I found something interesting and want to share it.
That didn’t feel like the community I fell in love with so many years ago. It felt a great deal like the world we were supposed to be changing. In essence, the worst parts of the offline world – with it’s hierarchies, gatekeepers and power mongers – were becoming firmly entrenched in the new media that was supposed to circumvent this behaviour and create a new frontier. I was losing faith. And that is the last thing I want to do. There is so much hope left in the world. I still believe the good guys/gals will finish first.
But here at Le Web 09, I feel like I’m staring that ugliness right in the eye. The program is mostly made up of the members and sycophants of the cartel mentioned above. It’s only the morning of the first day and a big part of it has been filled with egos and posturing. I was really hoping that Le Web would actually be about ‘The Web’ – where it’s going, where it should go, how do we drive it in positive directions, the diversity of issues that we are still facing that are creating challenges for web-citizens, really ground breaking technology, visionary people and how we can all get involved in this change – but it isn’t. It is about a small group of friends and how they use/benefit from the web: Le Clique.
I belive there are three problems with emails:
- Its too easy to forward an email. Because they want to inform you, people are sending every piece of information they got. Who cares about filtering ? Not the sender. Maybe his time is more valuable than yours.
- Sending without a subject line is permited. Again, its the receiver's duty to interpret the message, and find a clever way to file it should it be needed again.
- There is a "reply all" button. This function should require at last a five key combination and a warning. Although it is very rare that a "reply all" is required and useful, for some people this is the way to reply.
Real life, noir&blanc
[test via Presentation Zen]
